Sgt. Joseph Matejov- Baron 52

Sgt. Joseph A. Matejov was killed in action on 5 February, 1973, when the EC-47 aircraft, callsign Baron 52, on which he was serving as an Airborne Morse Systems Operator was downed by enemy fire over Laos.
Sgt. Matejov was born in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, on 2 February, 1952. He graduated from East Meadow High School, East Meadow, New York, in 1970.
Sgt. Matejov enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on 14 July, 1970. He completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas and Morse Code Operator technical training at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. Sgt. Matejov's first assignment was to Misawa, Japan. He was assigned to Det 2, 6994th Security Squadron, Danang AB, Vietnam on 12 April, 1972 and was transferred to Det 3, 6994th Security Squadron, Ubon RTAF\B. Thailand in December 1972.
Sgt. Matejov's awards and decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross (posthumously), Purple Heart (posthumously), and Air Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster).
In September 1997 the Community Center on Misawa AB, Japan, was designated as the Matejov Community Center in his honor.
