Nha Trang AB, located along the southern coast of the Republic of Vietnam, was the first operational base for Detachment 1 of the 6994th SS when it was activated there on 1 July 1966 under the command of Capt Charles C. Crowell. Even though personnel were assigned to the base at Nha Trang, the first EC-47 aircraft (tail number 44-77016) assigned to the detachment did not arrive until 17 October 1966. By 1969, there were 16 EC-47s based out of Nha Trang. Many of the airmen assigned to Det 1 were assigned to off-base housing and actually lived in Nha Trang city. The detachment operated there until it moved to Phu Cat AB, RVN on 9 September 1969.
